Tracking Intersectionality Over Time: History, Context and Employment Practices in International Airlines.

The talk will present the findings of studies of workplace discrimination in comparative international airlines over time. In particular, we will discuss the role of history and context in shaping understandings of gender, race, class, ethnicity and employment practices.

Jean Helms Mills, Ph.D., is Professor of Management, Sobey School of Business, Saint Mary’s University Halifax, Canada; International Reader, Swedish School of Social Science, University of Helsinki, Finland; Professor (.02), University of Jyväskylä, Finland; Adjunct Professor, University of Eastern Finland, Kuopio. Dr. J. Helms Mills’ research interests are in the areas of Critical Managment Studies, Gender, Critical Sensemaking, Historiography, Intersectionality and the Sociology of Knowledge. She has numerous publications, including 19 books and edited collections, over 40 peer reviewed articles, 48 chapters in edited collections, and has presented her research in both national and international  conferences and  invited talks. In October 2014, Jean was awarded the President’s Award for Research Excellence at Saint Mary’s University. Dr. Helms Mills is the Co-Editor of the journal, Qualitatitve Research in Organizations and Management (QROM) and Associate Editor for Gender, Work and Organization. She also serves on the editorial boards of a number of scholarly journals. Jean’s research has been funded by The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC), The Academy of Finland and TEKES (Finland). Over the past decade she been directly involved in grants totaling in excess of CAD $12 million and she has currently working on three major projects both here and in Finland that look at Intersectionality, Sociology of Knowledge and Workplace Wellbeing, respectively. From 2003-2014, Jean taught the large undergraduate sections of Micro Organizational Behaviour (MGMT 2383). She now teaches the same course online, as well as the Organizational Theory course for PhD students. Currently Jean is supervising four PhD students. In addition to her teaching responsibilities at Saint Mary’s, she is a Guest Professor .02 at Jyväskylä University School of Business and Economics, International Reader at University of Helsinki, Swedish School of Social Sciences and Adjunct Professor at University of Eastern Finland.
